You need to understand the meanings for different linking devices.
Linking devices are made to clear the thoughts behind speech and writing and to make a connection between previous and present sentences.
Listing: Firstly, secondly, lastly, finally, to begin with, in the first place, in the second place
Adding: Moreover, furthermore, in addition, what is more, besides
Connecting: As far as….. is/are concerned, as for, regarding, as regards
Give an example: For example, for instance
Result: As result, therefore, so
Arguing against: However, even so, nevertheless, nonetheless
Disagreeing: On the contrary
Explaining: In other words, that is to say
Persuading: After all, no doubt
Comparing: While, whereas, on the other hand
Contrasting: However, in spite of this, nevertheless
