GAT General Math Tip no.3: Avoid silly mistakes
When I was in my school at International School of Choueifat my math teacher used to award us some marks for the working even if the answer was wrong. This is not going to be the case for the GAT exam. You will have to choose the answer from the options given below and 2 of the options in the answers are silly mistakes. If you do not check your working properly you might be trapped by one of the two options provided. I would like to explain this point with the help of an example.
Question:
x² + 11x + 24
What might be the value for x²?
a. -9
b. 64
c. -11
d. -8
If we solve the equation we would get
x² + 8x + 3x + 24
x(x+8) + 3(x+8)
(x+3) (x+8) = 0
X= -3 or x= -8
There is a high chance that most students would choose -8, but read the question carefully it asks you to find x and then x².
(-8)² so the answer would be 64
